At the heart of the city is the imposing Citadel, a fortified hilltop area that has protected the island’s inhabitants for centuries and offers impressive views across the surrounding countryside. Continue with a guided visit to the extraordinary Ġgantija Megalithic Site, located on the Xagħra plateau. Gozo to Valetta

This morning travel by fast ferry directly to Valletta, Malta’s spectacular capital city. Founded by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century, Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage city celebrated for its grand Baroque architecture, historic fortifications, and extraordinary concentration of monuments. Your Tour Manager will lead a walking tour through the compact historic center, introducing you to the city’s fascinating history and character. Its relatively restrained exterior gives way to a richly decorated Baroque interior filled with marble, gilded details, elaborate chapels, and important works of art.

Continue toward the impressive fortifications and enjoy views of the Mediterranean from Valetta. We will pass by the area around Fort St. Elmo, which played an important role in Malta’s military history, particularly during the Great Siege of 1565. The remainder of the afternoon is free for independent exploration. You may wish to browse Valletta’s shops and cafés, visit another museum, or relax along the waterfront. Those interested in Malta’s prehistoric heritage may consider an optional visit to Ħaġar Qim, an extraordinary megalithic temple complex overlooking the sea southwest of Valletta
